Expanded space and services represents a $67.5 million community investment.
(POWELL, TN – March 22, 2024) About 20 months after breaking ground, Tennova North Knoxville Medical Center’s new, expanded emergency room and 4-story patient tower is open.
Tennova North Knoxville Medical Center invested $67.5 million to add a 98,000 square foot tower that includes a new, larger emergency department on the first floor and more parking spaces. The second and third floors include the expanded 28-bed intensive care unit, 28 adult acute care beds, new meeting space and education rooms. The fourth floor is shell space for future use. As part of the expansion project, Tennova renovated and enhanced spaces in the existing building, including the pharmacy, laboratory, materials and facility support areas. We achieved a Green Globes Status due to our efforts in sustainable design and construction practices, including utilizing energy savings in the building's infrastructure and documented recycling during construction. Our partners for this project include Wold Architects and Engineers and JE Dunn Construction Construction Company.
“Today marks a new beginning for North Knoxville Medical Center,” said Bill Rich, CEO, North Knoxville Medical Center. “This expansion, which is the largest in our hospital’s history, enables us to provide easier access to services and a better experience to our patients. It also represents our commitment to investing in health care for the greater Knoxville area.”
Tennova North Knoxville will continue its commitment to serve patients and enhance the quality of care that earned the hospital accreditation as a stroke center and accredited chest pain center. The new entrance to the ER provides more privacy and expanded parking provides easier access to the ER and other areas within the tower. Within the expanded ER, we have a new results waiting area, Fast Track area as well as 2 new behavioral health suites.
“I’m proud of this milestone for North Knoxville Medical Center,” said Dr.Frank Beuerlien, chief medical officer. “North Knoxville Medical has a long standing presence in the community, and this expansion is a great accomplishment that couldn’t have been done without the support of the employees, physicians, volunteers and community members.”
Since 2023, Tennova has invested approximately $45 million in capital to improve hospital facilities and update technology. We continued to increase access to primary care and specialty providers including general surgery, orthopedics, urology, cardiology, vascular services and more.
“We take pride knowing that the Tennova East market has made a positive mark on our communities and that we’ve had a positive difference in the lives of so many patients,” said Tony Benton, chief executive officer, Tennova Healthcare. “As we look forward, we will continue to honor our promise - that when people in our communities need health care, Tennova will be there for them.”
